-- What is Custom LASIK?

Another recent advance in LASIK/PRK treatment is the use of custom treatment. In addition to treating refractive errors, such as myopia (near-sightedness), hyperopia (far-sightedness), and astigmatism (oval curvature), custom treatment allows for special “fingerprinting” of the eye with which can be used to even further refine the visual correction. Wavefront measurement is how that “fingerprinting” is performed.

A special device sends a set of light waves into the eye.  The light waves pass through the cornea, bounce of the retina in the back of the eye, and then re-emerges through the front of the eye again.  A battery of sensors measures the deviation of those light waves after their trip through the eye, allowing a detailed analysis of the eye’s effects over the entire surface of the eye. A mapping of the error in the eye is measured in this way and a custom treatment can be performed using this data.
